He worked with a storefront law firm and then a mid-sized firm before joining with Michael Sherritt to form the boutique immigration firm of Sherritt Greene Immigration Law in 1998. In 2013, Sherritt Greene was named one of the top 5 immigration boutique law firms in Canada by Canadian Lawyer magazine. Michael practices in all aspects of immigration and citizenship law. He assists applicants in all categories of temporary and permanent immigration to Canada, provides assistance to corporations wishing to relocate foreign workers to Canada, and represents clients in immigration and citizenship litigation. Michael is active in the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), both provincially and nationally. He served as the National Chair of the CBA's Immigration Section in 2000-2001. He previously served 5 terms as the Chairman of the CBA Southern Alberta Immigration Lawyers Section. He spent more than 10 years on the National Executive of the section and from 2016 to 2018 he was a senior advisor to the National Executive. He has frequently been involved in national consultations with the Minister of Immigration and the Immigration Department regarding legislative and policy initiatives. He has made numerous appearances before committees of the Senate and House of Commons on immigration matters. From 2008 to 2016, Michael instructed the Immigration and Refugee Law course at the University Of Calgary Faculty Of Law. He has co-chaired 2 national immigration conferences and numerous provincial and local conferences and seminars. He has been a guest speaker for Legal Education Conferences in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario Quebec and at the National level. He has frequently given lectures and presentations to members of the Bar, the general public and various community groups. He is listed in, inter alia, the “International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers”, “The Best Lawyers in Canada”, Chambers and Partners, The Legal 500 and Lexpert. Michael received the 1995 Suzanne Mah Award from the Alberta Human Rights Commission for “exemplary human rights, principles and ideals in the practice of law”. In 2001, together with Vancouver immigration lawyer Gordon Maynard, he received the Louis St. Laurent Award of Excellence from the CBA for “distinguished or exceptional service to the objectives and goals of the CBA”. Michael was appointed Queen’s Counsel by the Attorney General of Alberta in 2012. In 2017, the National Immigration Section of the CBA awarded him their Award of Excellence.
