Derek Anderson has been practising law in Alberta since 2009. He has since become recognized as one of the leading criminal defence lawyers in the country.Mr. Anderson started his career with the leading criminal defence firm of Dawson Duckett Garcia & Johnson (then known as Dawson Stevens Shaigec) under the guidance of Laura Stevens QC and Robert Shaigec, both of whom have since been made Judges of the Provincial Court of Alberta.
Over the ensuing years, Mr. Anderson has built a career defending people against criminal, quasi-criminal, and regulatory charges, as well as against human rights abuses. He specializes in in areas of sexual assault, domestic violence, homicide (and other violent crimes), impaired driving, and drug offences.
He has been a partner with Barr Picard Law since 2015.
Mr. Anderson has appeared regularly and successfully before both the Provincial Court of Alberta and the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench, and has successfully argued appeals at the Alberta Court of Appeal. Mr. Anderson has also successfully argued cases in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and before the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Before commencing upon a life in law, Mr. Anderson received a BAH (and the University Medal as top graduating student), and MA in English literature from Acadia University. This was followed by eight years spent in South Korea as a university professor and program administrator, freelance journalist, and regular columnist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation writing on Korean issues.
Mr. Anderson is also a regular panelist on CTV Television’s Alberta Prime Time, and is frequently sought out by television, radio, and print media for his expertise in criminal and human rights law.
